One of Oliver's best Christmas presents was the massive collection of Richard Scarry stuff that his cousin Emma (seen previously riding Koto with Oliver) gave to him. It included most of the awesome Richard Scarry Puzzletown sets and some vintage Richard Scarry books, one of which we had a modern printing of, "Richard Scarry's Best Word Book Ever." You would think that with a title like that, subsequent printings would only improve, if anything... well sadly that is not the case.. Vintage Richard Scarry is Best. For one thing the original version of the book is 94 pages long, and the new one is only 71, cutting out such topics as "Drawing and Painting", "Music Making" and "Out West"... here are just a few pages for you to check out and compare the differences.. if you like you can point out the changes in the comments!!! and if you want to see more examples mention it in the comments!

sorry Oliver, I guess you can't grow up to be a cowboy any more! Well Oliver will at least get to use our modern politically correct copy of the book until he's old enough to know that you READ books, not EAT them.

Whoa...I grew up on these books! Times have sure changed. At least you can sell the the original copy and make some mad cash for Oliver's education fund if you need to.
wow! what a rad collection. Margot wants to come over and play! Sadly, children's book printing has gotten worse over the years. Vintage is definitely the way to go.

Cousin Emma is pleased to see that Ollie is enjoying the books and town, and is also enraged by the reprinting of what is the most informational book she has ever read.

i knew you'd be mad about that part, Emma! wth!?!? girls don't play with dolls any more? instead they play with their trucks and building sets and play croquet with their brothers??? and what's wrong with skunks? they could have just drawn a bow on his head and a flower on his shirt to give him a sex change like they did to the owl in the gardening picture. (i guess at least they didn't just color the checkers so that it was a tie game?)
